Promoting Workplace Civility

“Incivility has been defined as low-intensity deviant behaviour with ambiguous intent to harm the target. Uncivil behaviours are characteristically rude and discourteous, displaying a lack of regard for others

Civility in the workplace is the foundation for effective interpersonal interactions. On the other hand, the absence of civility (i.e. incivility) is a widely recognised psychosocial hazard and a precursor to issues such as grievance allegations, psychological injury claims and workplace bullying and harassment. Busy workloads, organisational change, personal pressures, issues around work-life boundaries, poor person-job fit can all lead to a breakdown in workplace civility, but when incivility becomes normative in the workplace, more serious issues typically emerge.

The Promoting Workplace Civility workshops include a 3.5 hour Manager workshop and a 2 hour Employee workshop. Together these enable a top-down and bottom up approach to capability development, reinforcing positive behaviour and designed according to 70:20:10 learning principles. Each workshop builds the foundational capabilities to proactively promote appropriate values-based behaviour, identify and manage incivility, the common precursor to bullying and harassment and more problematic workplace issues. These workshops enable participants to identify and respond to workplace behaviours which often lead to conflict, grievances and bullying and harassment, and to revisit appropriate workplace mechanisms to address situations that arise.

Highly practical and applied, these workshops develop confidence and capabilities in making ‘needs-based requests, using positive communication and practical feedback to encourage positive interpersonal interactions. They have a proven track record in improving workplace behaviour, positively influencing workplace culture and helping prevent workplace bullying and harassment issues.

They are an excellent progression for organisations whose staff have already participated in more traditional bullying and harassment type of training and those looking for a more proactive and preventative rather than a reactive approach to interpersonal issues in the workplace.
