Challenging Employee Conversations

One of the more difficult aspects of being in a leadership role is the need to have conversations with staff about their performance and areas of improvement. This workshop provides essential skills for leaders in holding these kinds of tricky and challenging conversations with their staff members. Whether the conversation requires general feedback, constructive criticism or more formal performance management strategies, participants will gain confidence in knowing how to prepare, construct and hold this conversation using key principles and strategies. Participants will also be provided adequate opportunity to practice the skills in order to build confidence in holding these challenging conversations more skilfully.

Our practical 3.5-hour Challenging Employee Conversations workshop for managers gives participants the opportunity to reflect the kinds of difficult conversations they regularly hold and what makes these conversations challenging and to develop and refine the foundational verbal and non-verbal communication skills required. Participants are provided with a range of tips and strategies, including learning and practicing the EEC (Example-Effect-Change) feedback model, and learn how to practically apply the key principles and strategies for providing constructive feedback relative to their own challenging employee situation.
Content covered includes:

  • What are Challenging Conversations – participants reflect on the kinds of difficult conversations they regularly hold and what makes these conversations challenging
  • Communication Skills Basics – foundation communication skills, including Active Listening skills and non-verbal communication
  • Dealing with Difficult Conversations – tips and strategies for approaching a difficult conversation with an employee
  • Providing Feedback – types of feedback and the EEC model for structuring and giving feedback
  • Performance Management Principles – key principles and strategies for providing constructive feedback and how to approach performance management with an employee
  • Practice Conversations – case studies and role plays using feedback and performance management scenarios
